The dramatic losses suffered by these funds were the result of their large investments in illiquid securities known as: Collateralized Bond Obligations (CBOs), Collateralized Loan Obligations (CLOs), and Collateralized Mortgage Obligations (CMOs). As a direct result of the well-publicized turmoil in the credit markets, many of these securities are now illiquid. Additionally, the fund managers made huge bets on CMOs based on subprime mortgages.
